Just installed solar + battery. It's not to save the planet, I've lost faith that's possible. It's to give us a private power supply when things really go to shit.
The folks at the SWICG are also just volunteering their time as participants in the same developer ecosystem. A bit of giving and a bit of taking is needed.
Does this look like volunteering to you?
How about this? Did you know Meta is paying them?
https://socialwebfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/SWF-Annual-Report-2025.pdf
I was talking specifically about the SWICG. No one has a paid position in the SWICG.
That people earn their living in some way, have a job, are self-employed, receive funding/donations/grants.. well, everyone needs bread on the table, right?
I'd personally not accept funding from Meta, and they are anathema to what fediverse stands for imho.
But that is not the SWICG. It is literally a "community group" where multiple well-known folks from the dev community bring their expertise to, give helping hand with the unthankful chores, very similar to FEP or other ecosystem hotspots.
And collectively we are tasked with bringing fedi to a better place all the time, protect it from harms, and malign corporate influences.
Whether it is ideal or not (I expressed my opinion on this earlier), the W3C as home of the official specs, is part of the ecosystem, and a fractured ecosystem is a weaker one than when it is united and operating as a larger collective.
Reminder: Apple is not your friend, even with a new CEO. Apple will continue to do some good things and some very bad things. Any feelings of love you have toward Apple is not reciprocated: Apple has no feelings. It’s a multi-trillion dollar company that, like every other corporation, would like your money but does not care about you, or your values, at all.
@brentsimmons Replace “Apple” with any other company and that statement is still true, in case anyone wondered.

Too lazy to read the whole Meta settlement? Perhaps you need my esteemed colleague David Greene to read it for you and explain why it's good for Meta and bad for just about everyone else: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/09/metas-17-billion-settlement-bad-deal-teens-and-all-social-media-users
@evacide it would be nice to have even a little win once in a while. I can't even read this after that.

I'm bored. Who's your favorite tv character and why?
@Gina Dexter. You know, just a guy on the spectrum getting to do something that makes him feel something.
@gloriouscow I agree, and they even have emulators themselves on their site, so I mean
in fact at some point you should call IA and ask them to make you one of their supported emulators

Web search engines have been getting “better” for people who want quick answers at the cost of getting worse for people who want to learn things. Chatbots accelerated this trend but it predates them.
I’ve been doing “data work” for a while now and I’ve finally learned that wanting quick answers and wanting to learn things are fundamentally in opposition. There are people who only care about quick answers and they’re antipathetic toward learning.

My impression so far is that they're a corporatist front, whose public comments intentionally treat censorship, and anti-monopoly enforcement in the media industry, as if they're the same thing. YMMV.
@strypey
My impression is that they're an insurance organisation rather than a charity and they seem to have a right-leaning bias.
@BobLefridge
@neil This is the smartest thing I've read all day.
@cbleslie Oh dear! That doesn't bode well for your day :(

And if I talk to more than half of the vendors, I'll cut together some clips and post 'em.
And if I talk to everyone, or most everyone, then we're slow enough for me to start live streaming too, I guess.
The main organizer was, in fact, not cool with it.

@JulianOliver interesting, all online on my end 🤔
@petrikas Seems I can reach it via my German VPN, but not from an Aotearoa New Zealand IP directly.
When terrorists attacked the twin towers on 9/11, European countries joined the war on terror.
When Russian agents attack Leipzig airport in Germany, Trump invites Putin to the G20 summit in Florida.
Let us reiterate the words of George W. Bush:
"Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists".
